In 1901 the first trans-Atlantic radio message was sent.
In 1913 the Mona Lisa, which had been stolen two years previously, was recovered in a ratty hotel room in Florence occupied by a former employee of the Louvre museum who had been believed to be in on the theft. To this day many people believe the recovered painting is in fact a forgery and the real one is in a very private collection somewhere.
