Or At Least Inconvenient
by Bob Walsh
Regular
readers will no doubt recall that, as a retired Peace Officer in the
formerly great state of California I have to qualify yearly with my
retired weapon in order to maintain my weapons privilege. You may also
recall that my alma mater, Deuel Vocational Institution, closed down
their range for an indefinite period due to some unspecified problem.
It was then announced that the whole prison will be shutting down late
next year due to a lack of customers. I just learned that the range
will NOT be reopened and that in order to do my qualifications (if I
choose to do them with the Department, which is not required) I have to
go to the Academy at Galt.
That
is not a HUGE problem. Galt is only about 8-10 driving minutes farther
from my home than the prison. Also, due to the set-up, the thing at
Galt is an all-day, drop-in arrangement rather then scheduled. It is a
pain in the butt, but not a HUGE pain in the butt.
That
being said, it will be a much bigger pain in the butt for the poor
buggers who work at DVI and are looking at being relocated or unemployed
at this time next year. That REALLY sucks.
I received my new ID in October. State Peace Officers may qualify with any licensed firearms instructor. I never qualify with TABC because they put the retirees on the line with the still working Agents. Sometimes they still run and stuff.
ReplyDeleteActually I can do my own if I have to. Nothing in our rules for retirees says you can't, and my range cert is from the FBI and NRA, it does not expire like our department certs do. Plus my GF has a valid range cert. I do, however, like to do it with the dept now and again just to keep the paperwork current.
