The
formerly great state of California is moving closer to approving paying
out a shit-ton of state money to it's Black residents who can prove
they are descended from Black folks held as slaves.  (Funny, but I seem
to remember that there was never legal slavery inside the state of
California nor the Republic of California and there never was a
Territory of California.  I am puzzled as to why my tax money should be
at risk for this project.)
The
payment plan, assuming it is ever finally approved and budgeted, would
(at this stage of the language) be set up for any person with at least
one Black ancestor who was enslaved anywhere in the United States or who
is descended from any free Black person who was in the United States
prior to 1900.
Right now a
committee, that has been looking at this question for over a year, has
voted 5-4 to proceed under these parameters.
It
is also not completely clear what form of reparations the California
Reparations Task Force will recommend, or what the legislature's
reaction to the final proposal will be.
Because maybe if we pay them they will like us. (smh).
