California State Senator Anthony Portantino

State Senator Anthony Portantino is a solid, reliable SoCal Democrat-Socialist. He is also the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.  He is in the process of introducing a bill that would pay unemployment insurance to persons who are voluntarily off work due to being on strike.  This proposal is essentially identical to one proposed in 2019 that did not get much traction.  The California Labor Federation LOVES it but pretty much anybody who employs anybody does not.

It is too late in the legislative year to actually introduce a new bill, so what they do is a "gut-and-amend."  They take a bill that is going nowhere and remove everything except the bill number, then put in all new language.

Legislators will be back from their summer recess on Monday so there will almost certainly be some action on this matter.
