There are now two firms running
robotaxis in San Francisco. On of them is Cruise. They were just
within the last week or so authorized to run 24-7. Previously they had
been restricted to off-peak hours.
On
Thursday night one of the Cruise Car robotaxis did not "see" a
firetruck with red lights and sirens approaching the intersection and
decided since it had the green light everything was cool. It wasn't.
The passenger in the taxi was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
City
officials are now working with the state PUC to halt the "expansion" of
the use of robotaxis. Apparently they sometimes also freeze up and
block emergency vehicles.
