AngelAnn Flores was formerly the head of the Stockton
Unified School District Board. She was tried for three felonies.
Filing a false insurance claim, embezzlement and misuse of public
funds. Her trial just ended. She was in fact found guilty of filing a
false insurance claim but found not guilty of embezzlement and misuse
of public funds. Her lawyer, Tori Verber Salazar, was the former San
Joaquin County District Attorney.
The
false insurance claim asserts that she filed a claim on a policy for an
accident that took place BEFORE the effective date of the policy. She
bought a six-month policy from Sentry Insurance the same day as the
crash and reported it three days later. The insurance company paid out
$2,010.68 on the accident to the girlfriend of one of Ms. Flores'
coworkers, who at the time of the wreck owned the car. Both the
California Dept. of Insurance and the National Insurance Crime Bureau
declined to pursue charges relating to the crash.
The other charges related to routine shenanigans commonly indulged in by elected officials with "company" credit cards.
Ms.
Flores will be sentenced on September 22. She has announced her intent
to appeal. There are allegedly some issues with a search warrant that
might very well give her a leg to stand on in this issue.
