Bernie Sanders hates Israel

His vitriol is directed at Netanyahu, but the substance harms all Israelis.

The mask is finally off. US Senator Bernie Sanders can no longer claim to support Israel while merely offering criticism of its leaders. His latest tirade puts all Israelis in the crosshairs, even if he says he’s only talking about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet.

“Today, a war criminal under indictment from the ICC will be welcomed to the White House,” Sanders wrote on social media as the Israeli prime minister was welcomed to the White House on Monday. “Trump, like Biden before him, has aided and abetted the extremist Netanyahu government as it has systematically killed and starved civilians in Gaza.”

Sanders directs his vitriol at Bibi, but indirectly slanders all Israelis.

Israelis from across the political spectrum are engaged in the Iron Swords War that Sanders claims is a “systematic” genocidal assault on the Palestinian Arabs. Like other unrestrained critics of Netanyahu, the senator is effectively labeling all Israeli soldiers as murderers and war criminals.

One might argue, and Sanders probably would if challenged on the topic, that the criticism is not meant to slander all Israelis since IDF reservists are just following orders. But that would demonstrate a complete ignorance of Israeli society.

Two years ago, Israeli reservists, including senior Air Force pilots, threatened to refuse to report for duty because they disagreed with the Netanyahu government’s policy on judicial reform. There’s little doubt they’d do the same today if they believed the Netanyahu government was directing them to commit war crimes in Gaza.

But they aren’t refusing to report for duty. In fact, the IDF has reported over 100% response from reservists since the start of the war. Meaning meaning even many who weren’t called up have been reporting for duty.

The reason for this is that Israelis across the board disagree with Sanders. Israel is not committing genocide or any other war crimes in Gaza. It is finally dealing decisively with an enemy that should have been dealt with long ago. Israel waited too long, and 1,200 people paid for that mistake with their lives.

Sanders’ remarks at best label all Israelis as mere sheep slavishly following Bibi’s orders (despite evidence Israelis aren’t like that), and at worst he’s calling them all (left, right, and center) war criminals in league with an evil dictator. In so doing, he fuels global anti-Israel sentiment that these days more often than not manifests as antisemitism.
