Brandon Thomas is a police
officer in Windsor, CT. He has been arrested for firing a shot at a
fleeing suspect with his duty handgun when he thought he was firing his
taser back in January.
The
officer noticed a Jeep Liberty at a convenience store - gas station that
had plates on it that did not belong to that vehicle. The driver beat
feet when the officer tried to question him. Thomas pursued and, based
on body cam recordings, maybe-probably did really intend to fire his
Taser and thought he was using his Taser. He wasn't. Fortunately he
missed the fleeing suspect, Geovanni Nunez, and managed to take him into
custody.
Robert Devlin,
the State Inspector General, voiced the opinion that the shooting was
unjustified under the law. The I.G. obtained a warrant to arrest Thomas
for second degree reckless endangerment and unlawful discharge of a
firearm. Thomas is still on the force on restricted duty. He has been
on the job for three years with no other unfortunate incidents on his
record. His chief voiced the opinion that the facts of the case did not
warrant charges, but did not argue with the accuracy of the charges.
Nunez has a fair amount of dope and a set of scales in the vehicle, and an outstanding felony warrant when he ran.
