Multiple deputies injured in Virginia incident

Police rush to the scene where multiple deputies are confirmed to have been shot on Wednesday, August 13 in Pittsylvania, Virginia.

 

A shooter opened fire on deputies in Virginia executing a warrant, leaving two injured.

Deputies with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's had appeared at an address in Pittsville on Wednesday night when they were met with gunfire. 

Authorities say James Andru Lehnerd opened fire on three deputies from inside the home on Blue Jay Lane.

The sheriff's office said that two were hit with shrapnel, one of them was taken to a hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries and has been released. The third was not injured. 

A standoff ensued between officers and Lehnerd for hours before a SWAT team moved in to pull him from the home. 

The Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said that Lehnerd would be charged while the Virginia State Police will conduct the investigation. 

Multiple law enforcement agencies had rushed to an address in the rural area of Pittsylvania County on Wednesday night. 

Virginia State Police authorities told WSET they had been attempting to serve warrants at an address in Pittsville when things 'went south'.

According to the outlet teams outside resorted to using loudspeakers outside and calling for whoever is inside to come out.  

State troopers, fire and rescue teams, the US Marshalls and a helicopter were all at the scene attempting to subdue the shooter. 

In a statement, Congressman John McGuire confirmed that deputies had been shot.

'My thoughts and prayers are with the two deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families,' McGuire said.

'We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time.'

Gubernatorial candidate for the state Abigail Spanberger added: 'While we await more information, Adam and I are praying for the members of law enforcement who were shot while responding to an incident in Pittsylvania County. 

'We’re so grateful for our first responders, who run towards danger to keep Virginians safe.'

Pittsylvania County is in the southern part of the state near the border with North Carolina.

  1. For a very long time here in Stockton ALL felony warrants were served by the SWAT team. Saved a lot of misunderstandings.
