Newsom signed SB518 two days ago. This creates a brand new state
agency (whoop de fucking doo) to administer reparations for descendants
of slaves. (It should be noted that California was NOT a slave state.)
The new law does NOT create funding to make payments directly to any
individuals. The bill addresses the new policies as the "Road to
Repair" and NOT reparations.
One
of the issues that this new organization will almost certainly address
is racially motivated eminent domain proceedings. It should be noted
that in many parts of the state Hispanic citizens were screwed over by
these actions much more than were Black citizens.
