THAT'S NICE. IT'S DAMN STUPID, BUT IT'S NICE

by Bob Walsh

Gavin Newsom, HMFIC of the formerly great state of California, has $50 million in this year's budget to develop a functional program to end the euthanasia of small furry animals in animal shelters in the state. If you want to be up to your armpits in cats, and to a lesser extent in dogs, that is a GREAT idea. If, however, you don't have your head up your ass it is not such a great idea.

Nice, but stupid. Much of California is like that.

I have a friend (Dog) that I met at the animal shelter. He's a mixed breed. I named him Buck. He was in line to be put in a chamber and gassed with about 30 other dogs. I'm told they back a county truck up to the chamber and place a hose over the exhaust pipe to blow in the room. When done they incinerate the carcasses. What a grisly task to do once a month.

A lot of the dogs were abandoned and picked up. They were friendly, loving and as you walked by they begged to be taken home. Any home but there because you could see in their eyes that they knew what was going to happen. Cats too. Cat ladies do perform a nice function.

I hope this experiment works. There is no love or devotion greater than that of a dog.

I HOPE it works too. I just don't see how it will.

Ya Trey, I would also like to see it work. Our two cats were also pound rescues, and we love them as much as if they were human kids. Problem is, all this will accomplish is one helluva lot more cats and dogs to be put down after this stupid experiment fails.
