Newly retired HPD Chief Troy Finner
Troy Finner was the Chief of Police of Houston, TX until
Tuesday night. He bailed, finishing up a 34 year career. He has been
the chief since 2021.
Over the
last few years the Houston P D has punted over 260,000 criminal cases,
including some pretty serious ones like sexual assault. The reason was,
at least in theory, lack of staff to investigate the cases.
An
email just surfaced indicating that he was aware of the practice of
punting investigations (technically suspending them) back as far as
2018. He had previously asserted he did not become aware of this
practice until 2021.
It is not clear whether or not the mail requested his resignation of he just bailed on his own.
Neither the mayor nor the chief is commenting beyond the simple statement of his retirement.
