Casey White pleaded guilty to escape charges 

 

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, ALABAMA: Convicted prisoner Casey White, who had escaped from prison after starting a romantic relationship with a guard, has entered a guilty plea for the escape charge against him. In return, the murder charge he was facing in the death of former prison guard Vicky White has been dropped by Alabama prosecutors.

 

In April 2022, the late prison guard helped Casey, who was serving a 75-year prison sentence, escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama, by leading him to a patrol car and claiming she was taking him to court for a mental health evaluation. However, there was no scheduled evaluation, and the incident was just the first step in their escape plan. Vicky was the assistant director of corrections at the jail, and on the morning of the escape, she was caught on surveillance footage leading Casey to the patrol car.

 

Casey and Vicky sparked a massive manhunt after disappearing and spending 11 days on the run as they planned to start a new life together. They were found in Indiana after their car rammed into a ditch during a police chase on May 9, 2022. The couple was located at a hotel and led the cops on a brief chase that lasted a few minutes. Vicky tragically shot herself when the police were trying to apprehend the couple. Casey was later taken into custody and could be heard pleading with officers to check on her condition as he was being handcuffed. "Please check on my wife," he had said.

'We was in love'

"It wasn’t supposed to go that way," Casey said in a courtroom apology to Vicky's mother on Thursday, May 4, 2023, as reported by AL.com. "Things happened... and we was in love." Casey has pleaded guilty to a first-degree escape charge and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Vicky's charges were dropped after her death. She was a top-ranking official at the prison where she oversaw Casey and other inmates. Vicky was set to retire just days after the escape.

'Vicky made this choice'

After the news broke, several people took to Twitter to say it was fair to drop the charges against Casey. One commented, "Vicky chose to help him escape and then kill herself. As big of a pos as he is, he shouldn’t have been charged with her murder," while another said, "I agree with this. She committed suicide."

A third said, "Yes. Escaping but I agree that no murder charge as he didnt murder her. She killed herself," while a fourth agreed and wrote, "Yeah I think that was ridiculous, them trying to charge him for her suicide." A user commented, "I think it’s devastating what happened. But, Vicky made this choice."

One said, "He wasn't worth it, Vicky," while another commented, "It will be interesting to see what level of confinement he will be in. I’m sure corrections officials don’t want to be embarrassed again."
