Defense Minister Israel Katz (L) and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich are spearheading the plan to establish 22 new Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria
Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved the establishment of 22 new
Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, a historic move kept under
wraps until recently that marks a significant step in strengthening
Israel’s presence in the biblical heartland. The plan includes the
re-establishment of two communities uprooted during the 2005 Gaza disengagement.
The decision, spearheaded by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, includes legalizing outposts such as Homesh
and Sa-Nur, which were forcibly evacuated 20 years ago. Four of the new
communities will be strategically positioned along the Jordan border,
bolstering Israel’s eastern frontier. This comes just days after the
government backed a plan to build 180,000 housing units in Samaria,
signaling a robust commitment to Jewish settlement.
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana hailed the move as the “only path to peace,”
arguing that full Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria is
essential for regional stability. “Jewish communities are not an
obstacle to peace but the key to Israel’s future,” Ohana stated, echoing
sentiments from religious and nationalist leaders. The decision aligns
with growing calls from figures like Smotrich, who has long advocated
for expanding Israel’s biblical borders, citing divine promises from
Genesis 15:18.

The cabinet’s vote, described as a “once-in-a-generation”
opportunity, coincides with the 58th anniversary of Judea and Samaria’s
liberation during the 1967 Six-Day War. Supporters see it as a
correction of past mistakes, particularly the 2005 disengagement, which
they argue emboldened groups like Hamas, culminating in the atrocities
of October 7, 2023. Local leaders, including Samaria Regional Council
head Yossi Dagan, celebrated the decision, reciting the Shehecheyanu prayer for this “historic moment.”
However, the move has sparked international outcry. The Palestinian
Authority condemned it as a “provocation,” while France, Britain, and
Canada warned of sanctions, accusing Israel of undermining a two-state solution. The UN and Arab League are expected to push resolutions against the plan. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar
dismissed the criticism, declaring, “We are a proud nation fighting for
our biblical homeland, and we will not bow to external dictates.”
This decision reflects Israel’s resolve to secure its ancestral lands
amid rising threats from Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Islamic
Jihad, which have intensified attacks in Judea and Samaria. As the
Jewish population in the region surpasses 500,000, with projections of
reaching one million by 2047, Israel is doubling down on its divine and
historical claim to the land, undeterred by global opposition.
