IT’S THE DOG, STUPID

On Friday’s NBC Today show, David Gregory interviewed political satirist and comedian Sephen Colbert about the election campaign. Colbert doesn’t think the economy or the social conservative issues really matter all that much to the voters in this year’s presidential election. He thinks the election will be won or lost mainly because of a dog.

Here is how Colbert answered one of Gregory’s questions:

GREGORY: What decides this election? Not on all the issues, but as you look at these two candidates, their personalities, their qualities, what does this come down to?

COLBERT: It comes down to who has been crueler to a dog. Apparently it comes down to whether or not it's crueler for an adult man [Romney] to strap a dog to [the top of] his car and then drive for 12 hours, or over a 10-year-old boy [Obama] to eat a dog given to him by his stepfather. As far as I can tell, that's the biggest differentiation between the two.

I have heard of worse yardsticks to use to measure political candidates. Not many, but some. I just can't think of what they were off hand.
