MAKING CALIFORNIA SAFE … FROM POLICE FIREARMS

By Bob Walsh

A few days ago California State Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) proposed a bill that removes an exemption under current California laws. This proposal, if it passes, would require that police offices (including federal officers) who leave firearms in vehicles must lock them in the trunk or in a locked container out of sight.

This legislation was, at least in theory, prompted by two homicides committed with firearms stolen from peace officer’s vehicles.

I wonder if I should buy some stock in one or two of the manufacturers of small vehicle gun safes? Maybe law enforcement in CA will now start issuing such items to their officers. Could be a good move.

I have a Bulldog vault for my vehicle. It attaches to the frame of the seat by a cable. It also has a lighted four key combination lock. When opened the lid is spring assisted and the interior is lighted. Most burglars probably have wire cutters strong enough to cut cable. So you wind up losing a gun and a safe.
