They weren’t interested in his thoughts -- or his change.

When Anthony Sevy tried to pay his parking ticket in pennies, a court officer choked him, causing him to pass out and defecate himself, the man’s attorney said.

Sevy went to pay his $10 parking ticket in February at a Michigan district court, but an official said he would have a $1.75 surcharge on his credit card. Unhappy, Sevy left and returned with rolls of pennies.

“He wasn’t happy about it so, in symbolic protest, he brought back penny rolls to pay for his ticket. The clerk wasn’t too happy about that, they refused to allow him to pay with penny rolls,” Sevy’s attorney, Jonathan Marco, told Fox affiliate WJBK.

Sevy was asked to leave, but two officers followed him into the building’s vestibule.

“As he was leaving the courthouse with his back to the officer, the court officer began to choke him out, grabbing him, brought him to the ground,” Marco said, adding that Sevy passed out and defecated himself. “I don’t think that in the everyday course of business, we poop our pants or go around defecating ourselves.”

The surveillance video then shows the officers arresting Sevy, who was later thrown in jail. Now, Sevy is suing the court officials.

“I don’t think anyone paying in penny rolls, whether it’s a preferred thing to do for a court clerk, warrants this type of assaultive behavior and violation of constitutional rights,” Marco said.

City attorney David Gillam told WJBK the city hasn’t been served the lawsuit, but he is aware of the case.

Although Sevy pleaded no contest to charges of disturbing the peace, his attorney says Sevy was obviously the victim.

“I think the more profound and long-lasting injury is the psychological injuries he’s suffering as a result of this. (The district court is) supposed to be a safe place,” Marco said.
