MORE FIRE FUN IN NORCAL

by Bob Walsh

As I write this (Friday evening) the Delta Fire burning between Redding and Mt. Shasta has closed I-5 for more than one day. Caltrans and CalFire say the road will be closed at least until Monday. The detour is about eight hours, on secondary roads. Fun Fun Fun.

The fire set fire to trucks that had to be abandoned in the traffic jam on the road, forcing Caltrans to survey much of the road for damage before it can be reopened. They will also have to remove burnt trees next to the roadway.

The Complex Fire in NorCal is not yet fully contained and has been burning now for more than one months. It has consumed close to 500,000 acres. CalFire is about to run out of emergency funding and they are having a shortage of trained air tanker pilots. And there are still months of fire season to go. In fact lately fire season is very nearly 12 months long in the formerly great state of California.
