FURTHER ON STAGG HIGH

By Bob Walsh

The local constabulary now know the identity of the second miscreant who went into the river.  They have not released his name.  He is still missing (or possibly, but not likely to be, hiding from his own family as well as the cops).

Maybe I am just an insensitive old fart but I have a hard time getting too worked up about somebody who jumps into a river fully clothed while fleeing the cops from a minor league fist-fight at a high school.  He may be in line for an honorable mention for a Darwin Award.

During my first month of working in Matagorda County in 1980 my partner and I chased a robbery suspect deep into the bowels of the lower Colorado River flood plain until the road stopped. I jumped from the patrol unit and was starting a foot pursuit into the swamp grass. My partner yelled, "Let him go." There is nothing on the other side of this swamp but more gator, snake infested swamp. Some guys in an airboat found what was thought to be one of his shoes a week later. (ABC)
