JACKSONVILLE, Texas - A Jacksonville police officer is recovering in a Tyler hospital after being injured in a shooting Sunday evening.

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, around 4:41 p.m. Sunday evening, a JPD officer was shot during an encounter with a suspect.

According to JPD, the suspect has been identified as Bobby Michael Dennis, 64, a black male who was last seen wearing all black.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a Blue Alert for Dennis around 8:19 p.m. According to the Blue Alert, Dennis is 5′9″, 152 lbs, and has a gray 2012 GMC Sierra with license plates TRW3919.

Police say Dennis is armed with a rifle and should be considered dangerous.

According to the JPD, the officer was flown to a Tyler hospital and is currently stable after undergoing surgery.

According to the Kilgore Police Department, a K9 unit was also injured in the shooting. The K9 unit is currently stable at a Tyler-area emergency vet.

The JPD advises all residents in the areas of the 1100 block of Churchill Street and Benson Memorial to remain inside, lock all doors, and stay vigilant as Dennis remains at large.

Adrain Miller, a neighbor who was at the scene, says that Dennis lives in the area where the shooting took place.

“It was very shocking because, like I said, since I’ve been living here, I’ve never known Mr. Dennis to be a violent person,” said Miller.

A reward is being offered for tips leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jacksonville Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

Jacksonville Independent School District announced its schools will be closed Monday due to the manhunt.

“A large area near several JISD facilities will be inaccessible for bus routes and may prevent many families and students from traveling safely to school today,” a news release stated.
