THIS FIRE IS GETTING REALLY NASTY

by Bob Walsh

The Thomas fire in Ventura County, CA.is getting really very horrid. It has consumed more than 140 square miles and, as I write this on Thurday morning, is less than 10% . Fire fighters are defending individual structures at times, but it is essentially uncontrolled. They have, from time to time, closed major freeways due to smoke and to give fire equipment access. The winds are high and the humidity is very, very low. They are at the point where the fire is creating its own wind effects.

Typically one does not think of December as being a big fire month. One would be wrong, especially after 5-7 years of drought. Everything is like a tinder box and if you fart wrong you could generate a new fire. It ain't good and there are a lot of people in SoCal who are going to have a really crappy Christmas.

I hate it that such a beautiful place is plagued by so many natural disasters.
