A boy in China has had a two-foot electrical cord removed from his bladder by surgeons after it was stuck inside his body for three months.
The 13-year-old, known by his pseudonym Xiao He, said he was curious about where his urine comes from and inserted the metal wire into his penis to find out.
Xiao He was taken to seek medical attention after he started peeing blood last month, according to a hospital report.
Xiao He is said to be recovering after undergoing a successful operation to remove the metal wire at the Songshan Lake Central Hospital of Dongguan in southern China.
His parents recently took him to see a doctor after the boy found blood in his urine and had difficulties peeing, according to the hospital's social media post on Thursday.
While examining the young patient, medics were shocked to spot the tangled wires inside Xiao He's bladder on an X-ray scan.
The youngster later admitted to the doctors that he had inserted the metal cord into his urethra, the tube that leads from the penis to the bladder, out of curiosity three months ago.
The boy claimed that he wanted to find out where his urine comes from and where the urethra leads to, according to the report.
But Xiao He soon realised that he was unable to retract the cable and had kept it as a secret from his parents out of embarrassment.
After the shocking discovery, the doctors immediately scheduled the patient to undergo the removal surgery on the next day.
During an hour-long procedure, surgeons pulled out the 70-centimetre (two-foot) long electrical cord from Xiao He's urethra with a cystoscope.
'I didn't expect that such a long wire could be inserted through the urethra,' said Dr Cai Chongyue, the chief medic who led the operation.
'Fortunately, the wire did not continue to cause damage in the bladder.'
Xiao He is recovering from the surgery and expected to be discharged from the Dongguan hospital soon.
Similar incidents have occurred in China before as doctors warn parents to educate their children about the danger of inserting foreign objects into their bodies.
Dou Dou, a 10-year-old boy from south-eastern China's Jiangxi province, had a five-foot cable cord removed from his bladder in June after it remained inside him for about five years.
After the operation, the youngster confessed to his parents that he had inserted the metal cord into his urethra out of boredom.
Dr Rao, a urologist who led the operation, told reporters that they saw 20 to 30 similar cases among children aged four to ten every year.
