On
September 13, in mid-afternoon, a 41-year old woman named Adams had
just boarded a BART train with her dog. The dog was on a least which
was secured to the woman's waist. At the last moment, just as the doors
were closing, Adams got OFF the train. The dog didn't. Witnesses said
it appeared that Adams was trying to attract the attention of someone
on the platform. The train door safety did not detect the dog least.
The train took off. The dog was inside the train. Adams was outside
the train. They were still connected. It didn't end well for Adams.
On the other hand the dog is just fine.
The
BART people say that animals other than service dogs are required to be
in a secure carrier of some sort while on BART trains. They also said
that there was no immediate indication that the dog was in fact a
service dog. The persons Adams was apparently signaling to was her
boyfriend, who was on the platform at the time.
The NTSB is investigating. They believe the investigation will take up to two years. Really.
