In
the formerly great state of California it is specifically illegal for
teachers to inform parents that their student-children may be or are
transgender. Two teachers in San Diego sought an exemption from this
law based on religious freedom. This exemption was denied. They are
now suing the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, and
various members of the State Board of Education. The suit is based on
their assertion that they have a constitutional right under the First
Amendment to inform the students parents of the situation.
The
teachers, Elizabeth Mirabelli and Lori Ann West, who teach at the
Rincon Middle School, have also filed against the Escondido Union School
District with the assistance of the Thomas More Society, a conservative
Catholic law firm.
A similar lawsuit is in process against the Chico Unified School District.
