Pentagon officials have said it is 'likely' Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed - but they don't think his plane was taken down by a surface-to-air missile.
Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told a press conference on Thursday that officials are 'continuing to assess the situation' surrounding the apparent demise of the Wagner heavyweight.
It came hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin broke his silence over the crash which killed 10 people in the Tver region on Wednesday. Putin said Prigozhin had 'made serious mistakes' as he offered supposed 'condolences' to the families of the ten victims who died.
The plane was also believed to be carrying Wagner co-founder Dmitry Utkin.
