Illinois Senate Bill just passed to the governor's desk, where he is expected to sign it.
Current
gun storage laws require that firearms be secured if anyone under 14 is
present where the gun is located. The new law will expand that to
include any minor, any "at risk person" or any prohibited person.
Violation
would carry a fine of $500 or $1,000, depending on the exact
circumstances. If the weapon is accessed and used in a suicide or a
crime the fine would be $10,000.

I keep a biometric gun safe on my night stand and also provide one for overnight guests.
