The anti-death penalty types, of
which Newsom is an admitted member, want him to jump on the band wagon
right now and commute ALL of the death penalties in the formerly great
state of California. About 40% of the 400+ condemned prisoners in CA
have separate, concurrent felony conviction which would require action
by the California Supreme Court in order to commute the death penalty
case against them. (I admit I didn't know that.)
The
18 months left in Newsom's term of office might only be barely enough
to accomplish that goal, assuming he is willing to stick his neck out to
do it. The problem is that it would further cement his uber-liberal
credentials were he to do so. Right now he maybe doesn't want to do
that because he is still delusional enough that he thinks he can be the
next president.
