GALVESTON — A 66-year-old man was arrested Thursday after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a 93-year-old woman in broad daylight outside the Bob Lyons Post Office on 59th and Broadway, according to Marissa Barnett, public information officer for the City of Galveston.
Doug Ancell, 66, was booked into the Galveston County Jail and faces charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Police were called to the post office around 10:30 a.m. after Ancell reportedly confronted the elderly woman, took her walker, and drove off in her SUV. The victim was not physically injured, officials said.
Law enforcement agencies across the region were notified, and a short time later, officers from a neighboring jurisdiction spotted the stolen SUV heading northbound on I-45. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, initiating a brief pursuit.
The chase came to an end when the SUV overheated
The chase came to an end when the SUV overheated and Ancell pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant in Webster. Deputies with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office arrested the man at the scene.
