THE REDNECK PARTY

Sarah Palin is the symbolic leader of the Tea Party. Will Dolly Parton, Wynonna Judd or some other country singer become the symbolic leader of the Redneck Party?

Forget the Tea Party... a new group is claiming to be the real representatives of the country's rural heartland – the American Redneck Society.

The founders see the funny side of jokes about rednecks made famous by comics like Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy.

And if you are wondering whether to join up, you may want to check your answers to the questions on the society's website (shown below).

But executive director Rob Clayton also has a serious goal to help 'rednecks' to benefit from being part of a big organiZation.

'I really felt that American Rednecks are an under-served but large population that could benefit from a formal membership structure,' he said after launching the society.

A portion of the $20 membership fee will be set aside to set up a 'Redneck Scholarship' educational fund for 'rural youth.'

Members will also get discounts at stores across the country like K-Mart, Target and Costco.

'We're embracing the idea that the Redneck concept can be humorous,' said Mr. Clayton, from Front Royal, Virginia.

'But Rednecks are a group of Americans who share common characteristics and have common needs. This Society can embody those characteristics and help meet those needs,' he added.

According to its website, the American Redneck Society, 'Aims to shine the light on positive characteristics of redneck culture.

'One such characteristic is a love of country and respect for core American values... those held by our founding fathers, not liberals in politics and media.

The society's motto is: 'Sense of Country, Sense of Humor.'
