ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

In 1799 the first known scientific record of a meteor shower was made. (Lots of records of comet sightings. Meteor showers, not so much.)

In 1864. during the Unpleasantness Between The States, Union General W. T. Sherman began the destruction of the cit of Atlanta, GA during his infamous march to the see. (They rebuilt the city. More or less.)

In 1927 Leon Trotsky was kicked out of the Communist Party and Joseph Stalin took over running the Soviet Union.

In 1954 Ellis Island was closed down as an immigration intake center. The very first person to have been processed in there was a young Irish girl named Rose Kelly. I have no idea who the last person was.
