'People counted you out, saying you're past your prime. Hell, I know something about that,' Biden told Astros manager Dusty Baker

President Joe Biden said on Monday he knows what it is like to be called past your prime.

'People counted you out, saying you're past your prime. Hell, I know something about that,' the 80-year-old said to Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker.

Biden welcomed the World Series champion team to the White House where he had warm words for the 74-year-old manager of the team. Baker became the oldest manager ever to win the World Series when the Houston Astros took the title.

Baker became a manager for the San Francisco Giants in 1993 after playing himself for 19 seasons, including for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He previously was the manager of the Washington Nationals from 2016 to 2017. He became manager of the Astros in 2020.

Some Democrats have questioned Biden's age and health as he prepares to run for a second term in the White House. But Biden's doctor has declared him healthy and fit to serve.

Biden is the oldest president in American history. If he wins a second term, he would be 86 when it is completed.

The president was full of quips during his appearance with the baseball champions.

'I remember rooting for him as a kid, and I was older than he was,' Biden quipped of Baker.

He began his remarks by saying: 'My name's Joe Biden. I play center field.'

And when he accepted a jersey from the team, he joked: 'Put me in, coach, I'm ready to play.'

Biden was joined at the event by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Notably missing was first lady Jill Biden, whose team the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Astros in the series. The Houston team beat the Phillies in Game Six to win the Major League Baseball championship.

'This next part is hard to say. They beat the Phillies in six games,' the president said.

Biden often jokes he is a fan of the Philadelphia teams by marriage.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is urging his Democratic colleagues to jump in the presidential race because voters don't want a 'coronation' in the primary.

'Democrats are telling me that they want, not a coronation, but they want a competition,' Phillips, 54, said on CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday.

He also cited New York Times polling that shows 64 percent of Democrats don't want President Biden at the top of their ticket in 2024.

'If we don't heed that call, shame on us. And the consequences, I believe, are going to be disastrous,' Phillips said.

Biden is currently facing Democratic challenges from self-help author Marianne Williamson and environmental attorney and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Phillips, who recently met with donors to discuss a possible bid of his own, has already said he won't back Biden in 2024.

'No,' Phillips replied when asked by a radio station late last month. 'I think the country would be well-served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats who step up.'
