A ceremony to mark the launch of a new North Korean ballistic missile submarine on Sept. 6
The North Koreans have announced that they have launched a
"tactical nuclear attack submarine." However, it may be largely
wishful thinking.
The ship was launched on Wednesday. Kim John Un was there to do the honors and make a lot of noise.
The
U. S. was aware of the beginning of the sub four years ago. Our intel
guys believe that the sub is not nuclear powered but may be capable of
carrying and launching nuclear missiles. It appears to be based on the
old Russian ROMEO class boats, of which North Korea has about 20 in
their submarine fleet of about 80. This sub appears to have ten launch
tubes. The Norks have tested sub-launched ballistic missiles.
It
is likely that the vessel will not be operational for at least 18
months and possibly longer. This is a normal time delay between launch
and installation of all the goodies.
