DACA COPS

By Bob Walsh

LAPD officers walking toward the camera

There are apparently a couple of DACA residents in L A who are now cops.  It put them in an interesting category as their legal possession of firearms was in a fuzzy area.  It was from what I understand finally decided that they could possess department issued firearms but could not own their own firearms legally.  It seems that the LAPD is now allowing them to take their issue firearms home with them and presumably carry them off duty.  Previously they had to leave them when they went off duty.

It is strange that we now have people who are not here completely legally who have badges and guns and are authorized to arrest citizens.  I am not saying this is necessarily a bad thing.  I am sure that some and perhaps many of the DACA people are actually very decent folks and will make good cops.  Also I recognize that we NEED more cops.  The whole thing just feels odd to me.  Not necessarily bad, but odd.

EDITOR'S NOTE: DACA cops? Why Not?

I'll tell you why not. Who did LAPD send to Honduras/Guatamala/Mexico/Venezuela to perform the background check? How many Cartel Members or associates or former inmates may have been hired through the DACA Program. LAPD and their clients will probably pay for this in the near future.

Anon, you obviously do not know what DACA is. Here is what DACA is:

DACA offers temporary protection from deportation and work permits to about 579,000 young people who were brought to the U.S. as children and graduated from high school, completed a GED or are veterans of the U.S. military. Every two years, recipients must apply for renewal.

I seriously doubt the children were members of or affiliated with the cartels when their parents brought them to the US. Since they have lived in the US most of their lives, LAPD can perform a thorough background check on any DACA applicants.

Anon sent me a list of 13 "Selected DACA Recipients With Serious Criminal Charges" From The Center for Immigration Studies.

Out of 579,000 DACA people there are bound to be some criminals. But that should not stop LAPD from hiring them. Since they came to the US as children, LAPD can run a thorough background check on any DACA applicants, the same as for any other applicants.
