According to Newsmax, President Obama wants to create a unisex-style dress cap for the Marine Corps uniform so that the hats will look as good on women Marines as on their male counterparts. The proposed hats are smaller and thinner than the traditional hats worn by Marines since 1922. Obama’s design looks somewhat like the French army kepi.
Rank-and-file Marines are up in arms over the proposal, complaining that the caps look like girly hats. “We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets and the DOD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats,” a senior Marine told the New York Post. “The cap looks too French and the last people we want to associate our Marines with would be the French military,” wrote an angry leatherneck to the Marine Times. Some say they look like a railroad ‘porter’s cap.’
"We need to be focusing on keeping America safe, enabling our military to do its job, and not make the military an experiment in social policy,” said former Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan. “[It's] absolutely outrageous. This president is destroying the morale of the military by all of these kinds of actions, whether it's from a unisex cap to rules of engagement."
Officials at Marine Corps headquarters have until the end of this week to either approve or disapprove the proposed change.
