Yes, the first round of the French presidential election will take place in the next couple of days. Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are figured to win the primary and go to the general election
OK, they are not REALLY Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. They are, however, pretty close. Jean-Luc Melenchon is a hard-core leftie who has announced that he is planning to fuck the rich deep, hard and continually and give that money to "the people" via handouts, work projects, etc. Marine Le Pen is an anti-E.U. nativist and populist. Her father is a hard-core racist and anti-Semite who has been successfully prosecuted repeatedly for being a holocaust denier, which is a criminal offense in France. The terrorist attack a couple of days ago in Paris is certainly going to help Ms. Le Pen.
It is not expected that any one candidate will get enough votes to walk away and a large number of voters do not much like either candidate. Right now the race is polling very tight between Melenchon and Le Pen, though much of that poling was done before the recent attack on police in Paris.
The large Muslim community in France is largely isolated and not assimilated into French life or culture. This has created a LOT of friction between the traditional (northern European Christian) population and the non-traditional ( second generation Arab-Muslim who are largely marginalized ) population.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Le Pen is given little chance to win the presidency, but if she does, it spells doom for the E.U.
