Markle, 89, and his dog both died in a bear attack at the Big Cypress
Wildlife Management Area in Florida very near his home. A black bear
was trapped by wildlife officials near the scene and they are testing to
determine if that is the bear that actually killed Markle and the dog.
Fatal black bear attacks are actually quite rare and cause only about
1% of the fatal bear attacks in North America.
Florid
fish and wildlife have proposed a hunting season on black bears to
reduce their population in response to several negative interactions
recently.

Several years ago my wife wanted me to accompany her on a wooded Mountain Trail in Colorado to see a glacier. She was wearing sling from a shoulder operation. A sign was posted about black bears in the area. I refused and followed that up by saying she would be the one attacked and possibly eaten because I could outrun her. Then I explained the food chain. She barely spoke to me the rest of the day. It was very relaxing.
