According
to various broadcast news outlets the United States Marine Corps is
sending about 700 people to Los Angeles to assist in providing security
to federal property there. If they are willing to kick ass, take names
and shoot a few people they may be helpful. If they are not, they may
not be. Deploying troops in the U.S. can be sticky. It was done back
in the 1920s to protect the mail at a time when mail robbery was
becoming a common crime. It was decided at the time that, since the
Marines are NOT part of the army it did not violate the Posse Comitatus
Act of 1878. It was also effective. That was then. This is now. I
can hear Maxine Waters screaming all the way up here.

The Tommy Guns the marines had at that time were purchased by the post office department. After the assignment was over they never gave them back to the post office. You have to get your equipment somehow I guess.
