Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir took the opportunity on Monday in the aftermath of the deadly Jerusalem terrorist shooting to send a clear message: Civilian readiness in the war on terror is no longer optional—it’s critical.
Six people were murdered and many more wounded on Monday when two Palestinian terrorists entered a public bus in northern Jerusalem and began executing passengers.
But the slaughter was cut short by two armed civilians and an off-duty IDF soldier.
“Just this morning, in the horrific attack at the Ramot Junction, it was again proven that armed citizens save lives,” said Ben-Gvir. “Two civilians, armed under the very reform we are leading, neutralized the terrorists.”
The minister made the remarks during an event welcoming the Negev town of Yeruham into his national program to expand personal firearm eligibility.
“Yeruham has a devoted mayor committed to the safety of her residents, and we’re working together to increase security further,” stated Ben-Gvir. “Yeruham residents—check your eligibility and arm yourselves. It saves lives.”
Mayor Nili Aharon: “This will significantly increase the sense of security. Given today’s reality, this move is essential. I thank Minister Ben-Gvir for this important step and his ongoing support of Yeruham. It’s a meaningful contribution to the safety of both our town and the surrounding region.”
Since the beginning of the firearms reform, over 230,000 new gun licenses have been issued across Israel. The list of eligible towns continues to grow, now including not only cities like Tiberias, Kiryat Gat, and Beit She’an, but also many neighborhoods in Jerusalem, Modi’in, and regional councils.

Enemies and criminals think twice before attacking an armed society.
