According to various news broadcast pieces today the
Trump administration is seriously looking at a move to deny people who
self-describe as transsexual the right to own or possess firearms. This
move has apparently been trigger by two high-profile cases in which the
shooters have, at least at one time, self-described as transsexual.
I
personally have a hard time painting all trans people as dangerous just
because some have demonstrably been so. (I grant you that many, and
perhaps most, people presenting themselves as transsexual have serious
mental health issues.)
Assuming
this move were to be successful what would prevent a subsequent
administration from deciding, say that Christians or Republicans or
young Black men are "too dangerous" to be allowed to legally posses or
own firearms?
This is,
IMHO, a classic slippery slope issue. The fact that Donald Trump is
(maybe) seriously thinking about it is troubling to me.
Of
course he also said today he is looking at revoking Rosie O'Donnell's
citizenship. An elementary knowledge of the law and the constitution
will tell you that a native-born citizen can voluntarily renounce their
citizenship (a couple of dozen do so every year, primarily for financial
reasons) but there is NO WAY the government can declare a native-born
citizen to no longer be a citizen. Maybe Trump is just being Trump on
this, but it tends to make him look like a doofus. He doesn't need that
and we don't need that.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The courts have and are continuing to rule against many of the measures Trump has take, thereby making him look like a doofus.
