Moss Point, Mississippi, is a
small town. It has about 11,000 residents. It's small town police
force just got a lot smaller. Brandon Ashley was it's chief. He has
gone to the Jackson County Sheriff's Dept as a patrol deputy. He was
with the Moss Point P.D. for 24 years, seven years as it's chief.
Three
other officers, Patrol Supervisor Sgt. Marquis Davis, Patrol Officer
Tyrone Baker and Detective Rebecca Rasannen are also moving to the
Sheriff's Department. Sgt. Kimberlee Snowden, acting Chief, is moving
to the Pascagoula P D. She has 36 years of police service. Bryanna
Williams is leaving Moss Point for the D'Ilberville P.D. Jamie Chapman,
Moss Point Detective, is moving to the Gautier P.D. Several other Moss
Point officers have put in for work in Gautier.
The
Moss Point P D is currently working three open murders and two
non-fatal shootings. Last year they had three murders in the whole
year.
A lot of the problems
seem to be a pissing contest between the Moss Point Mayor, Billy
Knight, and Chief Ashley. The troops liked Ashley. They do not like
and do not trust Knight. They believe he is dicking with and cutting
funding for the P D because of his personal dislike for Chief Ashley.
The city is now left with seven cops, at least two of whom are actively
looking for work elsewhere.

Police Chief jobs are political. Most last 3 to 5 years, if that. I was asked to apply for Chief's job 20 years ago but researched the pay, benefits and headaches associated with it. The person who took the job was bounced in less than one year. I may have traveled across the state with the State of Texas but I have no regrets about my retirement or benefits.
