ICE agent who shoved immigrant in viral NYC court video disciplined — as Mamdani vows to fight Trump crackdown

The agent then threw the woman to the floor in front of her two young children. The mother, whom ProPublica identified as Monica Moreta-Galarza, was taken to a hospital after hitting her head on the hard floor

 

An ICE agent who violently shoved an immigrant to the floor of a Manhattan federal court has been disciplined, Trump administration officials said Friday — as mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani vowed to fight such “horrors.”

Shocking viral video showed a distraught Ecuadorian woman confront an ICE officer inside 26 Federal Plaza on Thursday after her husband’s arrest.

She pleaded with the immigration officer before he shoved and tackled her to the ground — a violent response that drew outrage from progressives and, ultimately, a reprimand from the Trump administration.

“The officer’s conduct in this video is unacceptable and beneath the men and women of ICE,” said Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, in a statement. 

“Our ICE law enforcement are held to the highest professional standards and this officer is being relieved of current duties as we conduct a full investigation.”

The announcement came right before Mamdani convened a news conference to condemn the incident, the controversial ongoing arrests of immigrants outside asylum hearings at the courthouse and his electoral rivals Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams’ silence over ICE raids in the Big Apple.

Zohran Mamdani called out rivals Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo for allegedly staying silent on harsh ICE crackdowns. 

 

Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and would be New York City’s first immigrant mayor in more than a century, said he welcomed the news that the ICE agent was relieved of his duties.

“Yet what shocked us was not simply that act, but was the fact that we knew that act is taking place every day across this country, oftentimes unseen, unnoticed and unabashed in its cruelty,” he said.

Mamdani’s accusations came after a gunman in Texas apparently targeting ICE agents killed an immigrant and wounded two others — an act that prompted Republicans to denounce Democrats’ rhetoric against immigration agents as inflaming violence.

The socialist Democrat also lambasted Adams for staying silent.

“One of the key responsibilities in leadership is telling New Yorkers what you deem to be acceptable in the conduct as it pertains to federal government and politics across this country,” he said. “And amidst this horror, we have seen the current mayor abdicate that responsibility entirely. This is a position that has been described as having the second-largest bully pulpit in the country.”

Adams’ campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro said the mayor “appreciates raising the issue of what’s happening in immigration court—especially that horrific video of a woman being slammed to the ground.”

But Shapiro said Mamdani, as a state lawmaker, has done little to help immigrants other than offer words.

“In contrast, our mayor has done more for immigrants—expanding resources, reducing crime, and protecting all New Yorkers,” Shapiro said. “Zohran’s record is all rhetoric and zero delivery.”

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi highlighted the former governor’s record.

“Unlike Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo has not just forcefully condemned the misuse of ICE for years, but took action, signing the executive orders restricting New York’s cooperation with them on non-criminal matters, successfully guarded NY’s drivers liscence database from them and has continuously called out their abuses on  the campaign trail,” Azzopardi said.

City Comptroller Brad Lander, a Mamdani ally who has been arrested protesting arrests at the courthouse, and Rep. Dan Goldman (D-Brooklyn) sent a referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi calling for felony prosecution against the ICE agent.

Mamdani said the agent should face charges if he violated a law.

“Everyone should be held in the same laws,” he said. “We cannot have a separate system for those that are seeking to enforce those laws.”
