GAVIN IS TRYING TO THREAD THE NEEDLE

By Bob Walsh

Borneti Phillipis, 76-years-old, from Wackegan, Illinois, joined hundreds of black demonstrators for slave reparations on the National Mall Aug. 17, 2002, in Washington, D.C. Phillips traced back his ancestor, Robson, who was brought to the U.S. as a slave in 1786 from Uganda. (Manny Ceneta/Getty Images)

Gavin Newsom actually vetoed five bills that were considered "reparative justice" by those who were pimping them, the Legislative Black Caucus.

AB7 would have clarified the idea that California colleges are allowed to consider whether or not the applicant was the descendant of slaves when making admission decisions.  Newsom said it was unnecessary as California colleges can already do that.  He also vetoed bills that would have given Black applicants a leg up in the field of professional licenses and home buying, though exactly how that was supposed to happen I am not quite sure.

Gavin did approve three more bills in that general arena.  One coughed up $6 million so the CSU system could figure out how to determine just exactly who was and who was not the descendant of slaves.
