Los Angeles is awash in a sea of debt and budget shortfalls. Since their city is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, one would think that LA city council members would find something more important to do than to spend their time meddling in the affairs of Arizona. Ah, but political correctness seems to have dictated otherwise.
NBC LA reports that the Los Angeles city council passed a resolution calling for the city to "refrain from conducting business with the state of Arizona including participating in any conventions or other business that requires city resources, unless [Arizona] SB 1070 (Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhood Act) is repealed." Only one council member dissented.
The resolution was introduced by council members Ed Reyes and Janice Hahn. "Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard," said Reyes. "As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be... deported, no questions asked. That is not American."
The NBC LA report generated an avalanche of comments, almost all of them highly critical of the council’s action. Here is a sampling of those comments:
“While the City of LA goes down in a ball of flames (debt and unemployment), they are keeping right on top of the affairs of Arizona. While illegals invade this state and collect their free medical, free food stamps, free breakfast and lunch school programs, free housing subsidies, etc. the city insists upon their political correctness. ….. Wake up people. We cannot keep spending money we don't have. Let Arizona handle their problems as they wish. They are only enforcing the policies that Washington DC doesn't have the balls to enforce themselves!”
“STOP THE MADNESS!! I'M LATINO AND I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! I'M TIRED OF THE POLITICALLY CORRECT MONSTERS PUSHING THEIR EL STUPIDO AGENDA! WE WILL NOT RETREAT THIS TIME! RIGHT ON TO ARIZONA!! WHEN WILL CALIFORNIA GET SOME BALLS AND START DOING THE SAME THING!!”
“If I were able to move to Arizona, I would do it in a heartbeat and get out of this state. The priorities here are so screwed up. Los Angeles is sending the wrong statement. They can't fix their own problems so let's boycott a state who at least is making an effort to control illegal immigration. I'll be sure to look for mail order stuff coming from AZ now instead of running to LA!”
“Once again, the mayor and the city council display their propensity for highlighting their stupidity! They need to do the job they were voted in to do and keep their noses out of Arizona's business. The mayor and all his cronies in the council have brought L.A. to the threshold of hell, and they're criticizing AZ.???? We need to get rid of them!”
