NEW ZEALAND CONVICT CLOBBERS GUARD WHILE SOUSED ON SOAP

Hand sanitizer? Yuk! Back when I was in California, prison inmates made Pruno, a highly potent booze, out of canned prunes fermented in their sinks.

Tuarea Pahi, 24, and two fellow inmates from Rolleston Prison discovered that by adding sugar-based "mixers", like fruit juices, to the hand sanitisers they could make a powerful home brew.

After downing the concoction, Pahi assaulted a prison guard, an attack he said he did not remember, and one that came as a shock to the officer since they had been on friendly terms before then.

Pahi had an extra 70 days added to his jail term after admitting the assault at a district court session heard inside the men's prison, the New Zealand Herald reports.

The court was told Pahi and his two friends were caught "highly intoxicated" on September 4.

Prison manager Mike Howson explained how they managed to get drunk while behind bars.

"Last month, staff noticed three prisoners appeared to be intoxicated," he said.

"It was found that the prisoners had foolishly consumed hand sanitiser."

Following the February 22 earthquake in Christchurch, thousands of bottles of hand sanitisers were given out to residents to try to stop the spread of infection and disease.

Canterbury prison bosses thought they were helping out their inmates by providing a similar service.

Alcohol is a contraband item in prison.

Prisoners found making or consuming it face disciplinary action.
