AN UNWELCOMED FIRST

by Bob Walsh

Correctional Officer James Gomm was murdered by a prisoner at the Stillwater prison in Minnesota. Besides the tragedy in general what was unusual is that, as far as they can tell, Gomm is the first prison officer ever murdered on the job in the state.

The suspect, Edward Muhammad Johnson, 42, was doing 29 years for second degree murder from 2003. The murder occurred in an industry shop building. Johnson has been moved to the state's max security facility in Oak Park Heights.
