THE BEST WAY TO CUT DOWN THE SMUGGLING OF CONTRABAND INTO PRISONS IS TO ALLOW NO VISITATIONS AND TO THOUROUGHLY SEARCH ALL PRISON STAFF MEMBERS WHEN THEY COME TO WORK ..... HOWEVER, SOME CONTRABAND WILL STILL GET INSIDE

After making visitation to be only by video the TDCJ knew where the contraband had to be coming from. TDCJ established its own police force (OIG) more than a decade ago to police the Correctional officers. Sadly, even though some arrests were made contraband smuggling by the CO's is a lucrative business. Texas has never given adequate funds to TDCJ and they aren't going to start now. I worked there for one year. It was the worst job I ever had. Living conditions for inmates was poor at best. "Look out, Boss, Dead man here." I heard that several times on the job. Building Tenders ran the cell blocks and inmates would not look a CO in the eyes. W.J. Estelle ran a tough prison system.

So basically we have criminals guarding the criminals. Great system.
