Sarah
Warthemann is a nurse with Kaiser in Woodland Hills. She has just
filed charges with the NLRB against the United Nurses Association of
California, the nurses union at her workplace. She asserts that union
officials threatened to have her fired if she refused to become a full
member. Chapter 7 of the National Labor Relations Act protects worker's
rights to not participate in or support union activities. Ms.
Warthermann has issues with some of the political programs supported by
the union and does not wish to support them.
CA
is not a right-to-work station and persons can be required to pay union
dues for collective bargaining costs. They may NOT be required to
become full members and can not be required to pay for political
activity. An earlier such NLRB complaint filed by another nurse at the
same work site was recently reached by settlement which supported the
nurses rights.
It would seem that UNAC is either stuck on stupid or just doesn't care.
