An off-duty San Francisco sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a 17-year-old Alameda boy near Oakland's Lake Merritt early Monday after the suspect tried to rob the officer and his girlfriend, authorities said.

The victims were moving the woman's car parked on the 400 block of Lee Street in the Adams Point neighborhood when the youth allegedly held them up shortly after 1:30 a.m., said Oakland police Sgt. Mike Gantt.

The juvenile demanded money while pointing a gun at the woman, Gantt said. The woman's boyfriend, a 20-year veteran of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, pulled out his service pistol and shot the boy several times, police said.

The wounded boy was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland and is expected to recover, authorities said. A replica gun was recovered at the scene, police said. The couple weren't hurt.

Gantt said investigators believe the boy was involved in at least two robberies in the area shortly before the shooting.
