OFFICER FOUND GUILTY IN ON-DUTY SHOOTING DEATH OF SIX-YEAR OLD

by Bob Walsh

Derrick Stafford, 33, used to be a police officer in Marksville, LA and a part-time city marshal. He was charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder in an on-duty shooting.

Stafford and another officer, Norris Greenhouse Jr., fired a total of 18 rounds into a car being driven by Christopher Few after police followed the car for two miles thru town on November 3 of 2015. Few was seriously injured and his son, Jeremy Mardis, died.

Stafford asserts that he had no idea the child was in the car. He was belted into the front seat and the shooting took place at 9 p.m., well after dark. Stafford says he fired because he believed Few was about to back his car into Officer Greenhouse.

Stafford was found guilty of manslaughter for the death of the child and attempted manslaughter for shooting Few. Officer Greenhouse, 25, will be tried separately later this year.

Stafford has yet to be sentenced.
