Ten prisoners got out of the Orelans County Slammer early
Friday due to a combination of poor staffing, crappy hardware and maybe
a little help from their friends.
Ten
men got thru a wall in the cell by removing the crapper and breaking up
the wall behind it. The ten men were not missed for HOURS but were
seen by passers by, wearing prison clothes, crossing a freeway nearby.
Apparently nobody bothered to tell the cops about it.
It
seems that there was no deputy assigned to the pod but there was a
"technician" (?) who left to get some chow. That is when the prisoners
beat feet. Apparently the "technician" didn't notice that he was ten
men short. The authorities have determined the men were gone for seven
hours before their escape was noticed.
The
Sheriff has, to her credit, been bugging the parish for ages for
hardware upgrades and staff. The facility is staffed at about 60% of
recommended staffing. She also said that there were some (unspecified)
indications of inside help. The facility itself is only ten years old.
The one it replaced was positively ancient.
Three staff members are currently under suspension for unspecified reasons due to this incident.
The cops are providing protection for some witnesses in active pending cases.
